Hi,

Quote:

Thanks for the info, any ideas as to when 3.2 will be available?

We hope v3.2 is expected to be released in another 3 - 4 weeks.

Quote:

I forgot to ask. I'm going to be putting in a new replication server running 3.1, will my existing 2.5.x customers be able to replicate to it?

No, existing v2.5.x backup server cannot replicated to v3.1 replication server. If you wish to replicate the clients backup data from your existing v2.5.x backup server, then install replication server also with StoreGrid v2.5.x. Once v3.2 is available, you can upgrade your existing v2.5.x Backup/Replication server to v3.2 and have them replicated.

Hope this clear.

Regards,
+1 on the suggestion to relocate SGTrash
+10 on the suggestion to auto purge

I like the idea of having a fail-safe in place, but it can certainly mess with the management of storage volumes. We provision our SAN luns based on very strict criteria, so items are deleted, we definitely need that space available immediately. It is too cumbersome to check the storage availability in StoreGrid against the actual storage availability on the volume.

If I had to choose a feature between A) relocation of SGTrash or B) it immediately purging deleted data, I would prefer it to purge immediately.

**This is especially difficult to manage for some of us who are manually migrating our customer base from 2.x to 3.x. I have to carve and re-carve our SAN luns so that our 2.x server storage pool shrinks while our 3.x storage pool grows as we are moving customers over.
I'll have to concur on the Vembu praise.

Without going into specifics, the concept that Vembu is a software vendor without a sales team has been a very successful one for not only us, but I'm sure for many of their partners.

Many software vendors that people deal with, have the communication problems you run into with the sales team not understanding the product they are selling, and the support/engineering teams not knowing what the sales team is promising.

Vembu lets their partners act as the sales team, which allows them to focus directly on the development and support of their product. There is almost a non-existent buffer between their partners and their talented support staff and engineers which is almost unheard of in the industry.

Hats off to the entire Vembu Team.
Hi j1akey,

Unfortunately, the old 2.x backups will not be recognized by the 3.1 client. You will have to install a new v3.1 backup server leaving the older 2.x server alone. If you have to restore the old 2.x backups, you can do it on the server side of the 2.x backup server while the clients running v3.1 can restore v3.1 backups from the new v3.1 backup server.

Once v3.2 is available, you can migrate clients running v2.5.1 and backup server running v2.5.5 to v3.2. The backups will continue to run from where it left off and they all will be available for restore from the client itself.

It took me a little while to wrap my head around the idea, but I'm starting to get it. It does make sense to me, and I do think it is a better system than before.

However, in our case I don't know how useful it will be, because our backup services are all MANAGED (at least for now) which means our customers do not do any of the setup. We handle every setup manually. So, although this is designed to facilitate getting the customer backing up easily on their own, I'm now trying to use this feature to help my technicians setup the system easily.
Hi Compdocs,

Good suggestion. Will do it in the next release after 3.2. Also, if this is simple enough, will send you the php file changes for it once our development team has looked into it.

StoreGrid v3.x

When using the customer/reseller management tool I find myself clicking the customer on the navigation bar (left) and viewing the clients under that customer on the right. A lot of times I need to edit the customer details (such as adjusting storage quota), but have to click the root Reseller in the navigation bar, then click the edit customer details for the customer.

It would be more intuitive if there was some time of "Edit Customer Details" button while viewing the clients.

I hope this made sense? If more clarification is required, let me know!
I'm putting a project plan together to move our various customers from 2.5 to 3.1 and I'm wondering what the best way to go about this would be. As I understand it we need to uninstall the current application and then install the new one on top of it? Will the old backup data still be recognized with the new client?
Thanks!
This DID work. I suspect it wasn't working b/c clients were backing up. I stopped the backups, restarted the service (that probably wasn't necessary), and it upgraded just fine.

I only have a legal license agreement when they install the software where it already declares some points about losing data and the responsibility.

If you mean your rights about losing data its a TOS. If its the client rights then a SLA it would be. In this case I dont have one either and it would be nice. It should specify what kind of guarantee you give and the privacy of clients data. I would also like to go further and even give them an insurance policy in case of data lose if they have a replication with it.

Yes but not sufficient enough. For small and medium company is fine but when deal with enterprise, I believe SLA agreement is a need to protect both parties.

I know what you mean and we are referring to the same. I had customers that asked me what kind of guarantee I give them or what kind of insurance their data has. They would feel better if they had some kind of agreement that gives them XXX $$$ for each Megabyte of data is losed in case that happens. It would be like an insurance policy. How is the server ugpraded from 3.0 to 3.1? The instructions say to do this before upgrading any clients. I only have one server, so do you add the .bin / .xml files (server only build) on the server, then under 'configure automatic software updates', turn on automatic udates and point it to the same server?

I tried this, but it doesn't appear to work.

I am running redhat server. Thanks.

Hello,

I have noticed problems on Windows Server 2003 with customers complaining about slow server response when the client is running.

I have two customers with clients on their Win 2003 servers and I had to set both to only backup in the evening. It would seem running the application with lower CPU threshold makes no difference.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Support has said I'm the only one...
Using Storegrid V.2.5.1 on Windows XP where the box is in client and server mode backing up to a Western Digital 1TB USB drive.

Started getting the message in the title and the backups are failing. What could be causing that error message and how can I remediate it?

I only have a legal license agreement when they install the software where it already declares some points about losing data and the responsibility.

That makes them feel safe.

Just the full branding partners can as far as I know. And Vembu does check it with their legal department as well manually once changed. Unless you are a company with legally responsibility to clients I dont see why changing it and the Vembu provided is just fine. I think we are talking here about SLA agreement which is not what clients read when installing the product but its a policy against data lose.
Hi wintensive,

The process to integrate client registration in the StoreGrid backup server into customer sign-up page in a web site is described in the following knowledge base articles:

for StoreGrid v3.x backup server
======================
https://support.vembu.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=147

for 2.x
=====
https://support.vembu.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=149

In v3.x backup server, all the clients (no matter under which customer account they are added to) wont consume client licenses for the first 30 days and then will automatically start consuming client licenses after the 30 days.

In 2.x backup server, clients backing up under Trial customer will not consume client licenses and they can backup under the Trial Customer for a max 30 days, after which they will be deactivated, unless moved to a paid customer.

Good Day,

Did anyone have any experience on drafting a SLA agreement between service provider and end user? I would like to have a proper and legal agreement for my client to protect ourselves against unnecessary argument in the future since data backup might consist of certain privacy and security issues.
Subject: Detailed instructions for setting up web based customer regi
Posted: Sun Mar 07, 2010 7:08 pm (GMT 0)

I have heard about this before with Storegrid. Are there instructions for setting up a way to register clients on the storegrid server during the signup phase so I could integrate the process on my website and send the correct account info to the client so they can run setup with proper info.

Also, how does this affect free trials. I used to just have it default to that. If clients default to the "default customer" does it begin to use MCALS immediately>? Using the trial customer gave a free month before licensing was used. This is important. Thanks!
